Busy, busy

To anyone who reads this – sorry I haven’t posted lately! On Sunday I had to do makeup for this club event that our salon participated in and on Monday I was really hungover.

And that never happens, so I was pretty miserable.

That’s me working. Well, that’s my hand. After all the glamor work was finished we headed to the event/rave. It was held at this place called Coconuts at Town Square. I’ve never been to a rave before, but it was pretty fun. I even got Nik to dance a bit! Haha.

Planners/Organizers

Does anyone keep a regular planner/organizer? I love them. I would say I’m definitely a ‘list’ person and when I don’t have everything ‘planned’ out my whole life seems to go array. It’s also a great way for me to let my doodles out…that sounds strange, sorry. So far I’ve been without a planner for a month and a half now and I feel so anxious. My appointments, plans, shopping lists, finances…ugh! “But Melia, why don’t you just use an electronic organizer?” Gasp, how dare you! Never! Those things don’t work well for me. I have to write. Also, doodles.

The first planner I ever bought was some kind of generic brand (I’m not really sure what it was…), the second a Paperchase, and third a Moleskine. The Moleskine is great, but I did really like the Paperchase because it used the rings instead of the glue binding. The one I’m waiting on is a Moleskine, too, it’s just taking it’s sweet time to get here~

In my spare time I actually made a home decor inspiration notebook, which I managed to finish in absolutely no time and didn’t manage to curb my need for organization. I can’t help it! I feel like a crazy person.

Things I am excited about putting in the planner:

  • Recipes
  • Budget
  • Appointments
  • Stuff I need for work
  • Stuff I need for life
  • Groceries
  • Food I ate
  • Plans with people
  • Inspiration
  • Memories

See! Always with the lists! I am making a list about the things I’m going to make lists for!

If anyone is curious about what my planner kind of looks like/what I do to it, there’s a livejournal community with tons of cool stuff.

To be honest, the only reason I want a polaroid camera is to put the pictures in my planner. I know, I know…

Oh! I don’t think I mentioned this, but I applied at a wax center to work as a part time waxer. I got the job! I’m so excited! Having a steady income will be a huge relief, especially after the last few months I’ve been having. I believe I’ll be starting at the end of this month. Wish me luck everyone!

Royal Blue

Today I wanted to look like a mermaid!

So I did. Someone tell me why I always want to raise my eyebrows when I take pictures of myself?!

If anyone is wondering:

Eyeshadow

  • Surf by Stila
  • A light blue shadow from one of Victoria’s Secret’s palettes
  • Virgin by Urban Decay
  • Indian Aires MAC Pigment

Shoes are from H&M

For some reason I’ve been into really strong colors (like royal blue and marigold/yellow). Spring is already here for me I guess.

Salon & Spa Expo in Long Beach

Yesterday (Edit: Monday) I went to the International Salon & Spa Expo in Long Beach, California. Apparently I buckle under pressure and responsibilities because I managed to almost leave my tickets at home and my phone in my car. Awesome.

We left Vegas at about 5am and got there a little after 9am. I got a couple photos from the show and I meant to take pictures of the stuff I bought but I totally forgot about it before I brought it into work today! That’s probably boring for most people anyway…

So here’s a bit of a photo dump from the show. It’s almost like a giant swap meet for beauty stuff (only with some demos, classes, and REALLY LOUD MUSIC). I only brought 80$ to spend at the show but next year I’ll probably take more since I’ll probably want a pair of new shears or something.

First week!

My first week at the salon was filled with a lot of nerves and anxiety. I don’t think I slept more than 4-5 hours a night. The first day I had absolutely nothing to do. I managed to text a shitload of people to try and get them in along with TWO whole status updates about finally working somewhere. I had a few people come in and yesterday I had 3 walk-ins.

Anytime you start a new job you try to get a feel for people, read them you know? I’m still going through that. They’re all really fun to be with but I’m still getting used to them. So there’s that.

Also, when you’re a “beginner” you seem to feel like the biggest piece of crap in the world, LOL. But seriously. They’re teaching me all of these techniques and I’m asking questions all the freaking time…I kinda feel like, “Do I even know anything?! What the hell is wrong with me!” I can’t compare with 20 years of collective experience but oh my LORD. Talk about frustrating. It’s hard to beam with confidence when you have all of these amazing people around you. I just really hope I’m not irritating them with asking about so much…

I had to ask my mom for sage advice because my mother knows EVERYTHING. Not even joking. She even knows how to get the smell of garlic off your fingers! Anyway, I asked her how she did it…getting people in to see her and all that (she did nails for ~20 years) and she gave me little tidbits of what to do, say, all that. Then she told me how she spent an hour looking for “cute but comfortable” shoes for me! My mother is a saint I tell you.

I’m going to try and go shopping tomorrow so I can look more trendy. I feel so underdressed all the time. I can’t go on looking like a highschooler for the rest of my life I guess.

So maybe this week I’ll attempt at some pictures or something! I felt so busy this week. I even wrote a half-assed post after my first day but fell asleep before I could post it. Probably for the best, really.

All I want is a pretty closet!

When you sit around in a house for so long, you start wanting to change everything about it. It doesn’t help that, before I moved in with my boyfriend, 2 other guys (friends, haha) lived here. Right now I’m still living in a pseudo bachelor pad. We have Rat Pack posters, mafia movie posters (a la Casino and Goodfellas), random graffiti art, and so on. I was trying to morph the house – slowly but surely – into a normal home. We painted the spare room a nice, minty green color and shoved a bed, my old dresser and nightstand in there. Along with some branches and giraffe paraphernalia (my mom usually sends me giraffe stuff…including an enormous giraffe stuffed animal), it was coming along pretty well until it became our massive storage room full of stuff we don’t really want but can’t seem to get rid of.

But I digress…we redid the spare bathroom and made a “game room”, a place to hoard all of our nerdy gamer stuff. So now I would like to redo our bedroom a little bit, just repaint mostly and add a few useful touches here and there. Nothing crazy (was jobless, hellooo) but I really wanted to feel like an “ADULT”. So I’m thinking – what can I do first that really needs an upgrade? Hey look, our closet! So I went through all of my clothes and put about 20% in a large garbage bag to donate (soon, I swear). So now that the depressing part was over, I hopped online (HAHA who am I kidding…I’m always online) to look up some ~*inspirational*~ pictures of closets. Would you like to know what I found?

Who are these people? Mariah Carey? I mean some of them even look like stores! I live in a house but I think my closet could barely fit a chair let alone a sofa! So for now I’m just going through my catalog collection to find some organizational help and some color ideas. We’ll see what I actually come up with. In the meantime, I’m just gonna keep scrolling through the Ikea website and dreaming of “what could be”, LOL.

Edit: I found out that a lot of the real people giant closets weren’t really “closets”, people morphed an extra room or space into a massive closet! Wish I would have thought of that before redoing the spare room, eheheh.

New years schmew years

Well, the holidays are “officially” over! It’s already starting out to be a pretty okay year. Why, you ask? I FOUND A JOB :D ! The salon is about 10 minutes away so the commute is really great. I won’t start until next week but I’m sure I’ll post about it later.

It made me realize I haven’t worked since freaking June. It was nice for the first 2 months or so but then panic mode set in. I absolutely hated my old job…it made me such a miserable person, and I was so worn out on people I could barely muster to hang out with friends. I’m hoping now that I’ll be doing something I at least enjoy I won’t dread going to work everyday. I still want to go to school for web design/development but right now I just need to start making money!

Did I mention I made some cupcakes this weekend? Those are lemon with lemon cream cheese frosting topped with coconut flakes. We have a lemon tree in our backyard and I figured I’d try to use them before they went bad.  I can’t tell you how amazingly delicious they are but if anyone wants to come over and grab a few be my guest. If you can’t come over then I guess you can always bake them yourself, hahaha.

I wanted to talk about home decor a little bit (now I REALLY feel old) but I feel like 3 topics in one post is a bit much. I hope everyone had a fun and amazing holiday and new year!

Holiday treats

I feel like with a name like “Bake Me a Cake” would imply that this would be some sort of baking blog. It’s not, but don’t fall under the impression that I don’t bake! I love baking. So much that I take on these huge projects and fail miserably at least twice to finally get it right. Now that I’m older, I usually only bake in massive amounts during Valentine’s Day. The holidays bring in the nostalgia of my mom baking at least 6-10 different assortments of goodies each year. She’s such an amazing cook that I’m sure none of it went to waste (I know for sure it never did in our house).

I don’t go all-out like she does anymore but I still try to bake at least one thing for Christmas dinner. I wanted to list a few things she used to make (some easy, some…not so much) in case anyone was looking for a few ideas…myself included. **Please keep in mind that none of these pictures or recipes are mine! I’ve included links to all of the originals. Thanks!

Free? I like free

The big tree in front of the Palazzo! Sorry, had to edit 4 pictures into 1.

I finally finished Christmas shopping this week. All I really need is stocking stuffers and I’m set! I managed to finish all of the Christmas cards tonight, too. I’m trying to get everything taken care of early to make sure I actually send this stuff out. I’m terrible at sending packages…sometimes I won’t send anything for months out of pure laziness. (Example: My mom’s birthday was in September. She just got the box I made for her 3 days ago! ) Nik still hasn’t started yet so we’re going to head out this weekend and pound the pavement for gifts.

A few days ago I went downtown with my friend. There was a marathon going on so almost)all of Las Vegas Boulevard was blocked off for the runners. It made it easier to walk but unfortunately I had to park about a mile and a half away because of it. Oh well! It was pretty fun.
